We would like to take a family vacation soon...it doesn't have to be extravagant...we're thinking inexpensive; within driving distance; fun for us and Avery....
I ditto my dad's idea. We're going there next weekend - we go every year. It's SO relaxing, and great for kids. I'm not sure how much the cabins cost, but it's definitely worth it! And within driving distance from lots of places with outdoor stuff to do. Fun stuff.
We always went to Gulf Shores, AL growing up. I know you probably want to get out of AL, but from what I've heard (haven't been there in a few years) they've added a lot of fun family attractions. They have a water park, zoo, outlet mall, and of course the beaches. You can look for a house or condo to rent on greatrentals.com. We're going there in July and August...can't wait!
I would suggest Atlanta (aquarium, Piedmont park) or Chattanooga (aquarium, rock city), but of course I'm also biased to the Nashville suggestion. I can give you some ideas that are free there if you're interested...

Vogel State Park in the north Georgia mountains.
Colorado is great this time of year!
JK - I know it's too far but I can wish! NonaKat - who is SAVING Avery's voicemail and listening every few hours
We're heading to Chicago next month. Amy is in need of some down time once school lets out for the summer.
You can do Nashville for a few days. They have a very kickin' zoo and other family attractions. Give it a google and see what you come up with.

actually wouldn't it only be considered a 'vacation' if there were no kids? Otherwise it's just a trip.
